Glynn Turman:
The Making of a Legend
Glynn Turman’s journey to stardom began at age 12 when he took the Broadway stage as Travis Younger in A Raisin in the Sun, starring alongside legends Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee. That breakout role launched a six-decade career that has spanned stage, screen, and television. With an Emmy win, numerous iconic roles, and a reputation for excellence, Turman remains one of the most respected and versatile actors in Hollywood.
Outside of acting, Glynn is also a real-life cowboy! An accomplished equestrian and team roper, he owns a ranch in Southern California and actively competes in Black rodeos nationwide. He founded Camp Gid D Up, a free summer camp where inner-city youth can learn about ranch life, horsemanship, and discipline. He shares this passion and life with his wife, Jo-Ann Allen, a celebrated real estate agent and community leader. Together, they create a grounded and inspiring home life.
Turman is also a proud father of three children and a dedicated family man. Whether he's portraying a beloved grandfather on screen or mentoring young talent off-screen, his influence runs deep. With unforgettable roles in Cooley High, The Wire, Fargo, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Glynn Turman continues to surprise and delight audiences. And fun fact: he once auditioned to play Han Solo in the original Star Wars! Though he didn’t land the Millennium Falcon, he’s still flying high in a career that shows no signs of slowing down.
